Gwen Acton
President

Gwen Acton, PhD is founder and CEO of Vivo Group, a strategic consulting firm specializing in improving the productivity and innovation of scientists and other highly trained knowledge workers. Dr. Acton is also the current president of Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST). Prior to this, Dr. Acton served as Director of Scientific Development at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, where she established institute strategy for building long-term relationships with industry. Dr. Acton also ran the operations of the Functional Genomics Program at the Whitehead Institute/M.I.T. Center for Genome Research.
Dr. Acton received a doctorate in molecular biology and genetics from M.I.T. in 1991 where she discovered the LIM protein domain. She served as a faculty member at Harvard University in the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and led a class on Policy and Ethics of Biotechnology at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Gwen Acton is the author of two industry reports published in 2004 by the Cambridge Healthtech Institute, as well as scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature. She has also written over 50 articles as a freelance journalist for organizations such as the Associated Press Wire Service (AP), National Public Radio, and Technology Review Magazine. Tim Andrews

Tim Andrews is a principal of Vivo Group. He has over 25 years of experience working at the intersection of technology, strategy and innovation to boost growth and value production for the firms he works with. Tim melds understanding of organizational culture and learning with his deep knowledge of technology to make technology serve the organization rather than vice versa. Tim has worked with Drs. Alan Kay and Tim Gallwey, both established leaders of individual and organizational learning. Tim’s approach is to start from a human viewpoint, and then use technology and strategy as amplifiers of human capabilities. Tim has achieved outstanding results, particularly in knowledge intensive organizations where innovative use of technology yields substantial competitive advantage.
Tim’s experience includes roles as Chief Technology Officer at the Consulting Division of Computer Sciences Corporation and at Viant Corporation. In both cases Tim created the organizations responsible for internal technology infrastructure and, as a member of the executive committee, for evaluating the strategic impact of technology and working with senior management to implement appropriate systems. Tim was also a Senior Partner at DiamondCluster International, working with senior executives of F1000 corporations. Mary Adams Affiliate
Mary Adams, CMC has over 20 years of experience helping CEO’s and CFO’s conquer business challenges, including growth, change, mergers and acquisitions. She is currently the President of the Institute of Management Consultants New England. Prior to this, Adams had a fifteen-year career as a lender of risk capital to companies facing challenges such as growth, acquisitions, and technological change. She joined Citibank in Latin America and California where she served as the lead manager of challenging credits such as Packard Bell during their meteoric growth, and DHL when they were facing early competition from U.S. delivery companies. She also worked on a team that financed multi-billion dollar leveraged buy-outs.
From 1990-97, Adams built a successful Boston-area business for Sanwa Business Credit where she closed over $400 million in profitable business. In 1998, Adams became an internal consultant at Sanwa to help develop a company-wide strategic plan and redesign a key business group. Her leadership and financial skills also have contributed to the success of several non-profit organizations, including the Commercial Finance Association, and the Ron Burton Foundation. Adams holds a BA from Rice University and a Master in International Management from American Graduate School. Tom Ittelson

Tom Ittelson is an affiliate of Vivo Group. He is a scientist, businessman and author with over 30 years experience in business development, technology licensing, and marketing for technical companies. Recently Mr. Ittelson served as Director, Intellectual Property Office at the Whitehead Institute with responsibilities for IP policy, technology licensing, corporate collaborations and corporate sponsored research at this MIT affiliated medical research institute. He recently negotiated the $18 million RNAi Consortium Agreement with Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squib, Ely Lilly and Academia Sinica for the newly formed Broad Institute at MIT. In addition he negotiated over $8 million in funded scientific collaborations between Whitehead Institute and corporate partners including Affymetrix, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squib, Cellomics, Genomic Collaborative, Genset, Millennium, Merck and Pfizer Inc. Mr. Ittelson is a graduate of Harvard College in Biochemistry and did his graduate work at the Harvard Medical School. His book, Financial Statements, A Step-by-Step Guide to Understanding and Creating Financial Statements , has sold over 35,000 copies.
Carl Good
Affiliate Carl Good, PhD is an affiliate of Vivo Group. He has over 35 years of experience in bioprocessing and medical devices, specializing in bringing products to market in a regulated environment. His accomplishments include leading the development of the world's first point of contact oral fluid drugs of abuse test, the first instrumented HIV point of contact test and a number of other retroviral and clinical chemistry diagnostics. He also led the development of bioprocessing systems in use around the world. Prior to becoming a consultant, he served as Vice President R&D at Avitar Corporation, President of International Technology Partners, and Director of Product Development and Quality Control at Cambridge Biotech Corporation. Dr. Good also served many roles at Millipore Corporation, including Corporate Associate Technical Director, VP Development of the Worthington Biochemical Division and Director of chemical development at the Waters Chromatography Division and Manager of molecular filtration. He has also led licensed specialty forensic and retroviral testing laboratories. Dr. Good earned a PhD in microbial genetics from Iowa State University, and conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin and University of Massachusetts Medical Schools.
